In Singapore, aircon isn't a summer luxury. It runs almost every day of the year, often for many hours at a time. That constant use, combined with our heat and humidity, is exactly why aircon units here need more frequent care than in cooler countries.
The short answer: every 3 to 4 months
For most homes, a general aircon service every 3 to 4 months keeps units running cold, quiet and efficient. If your aircon runs long hours every day, such as overnight in bedrooms or all day in a home office, lean towards every 3 months.
When you may need servicing more often
- Heavy daily use: units running 8 hours or more a day collect dust and moisture faster.
- Dusty surroundings: homes near construction sites, main roads or industrial areas.
- Pets or allergies: pet hair and dander clog filters quickly, and clean air matters more if someone at home has allergies or asthma.
- Commercial spaces: offices, shops and F&B outlets usually run aircon for long hours with many people coming in and out.
What happens if you skip servicing?
Dust builds up on the filters and cooling coil, and the water tray and drain pipe slowly clog. Over time you'll notice:
- Weaker cooling, so you turn the temperature down and the unit works harder
- Water dripping from the indoor unit
- A musty or sour smell when the aircon starts
- More noise from the fan or blower
- Higher electricity bills for the same comfort
Left long enough, these small problems can lead to repairs that cost far more than regular servicing.
What a general service should include
A proper service is more than a quick wipe of the filters. At Premium AirCon, every general service includes cleaning the front panel, filters, cooling coil, fan blower and water tray, flushing the drain pipe, checking the refrigerant level and condenser operating pressure, checking wiring and the drainage system, and a full test run before we leave.
When a general service isn't enough
If your unit still leaks, smells or doesn't cool well shortly after a service, the dirt is probably deeper inside the coil. That's when a chemical jet wash or a full chemical overhaul is worth considering. Read our guide on which service you need.
Make it automatic with a maintenance contract
If you'd rather not keep track, a yearly maintenance contract schedules 3 or 4 visits a year at a lower price per visit, and includes a 365-day warranty.
