Professional servicing every few months keeps your aircon in good shape, but a few easy habits in between help it stay cold, clean and efficient for longer.
1. Rinse the air filters every 2 to 4 weeks
This is the single most useful thing you can do yourself. Switch the aircon off, open the front panel, slide out the filters and rinse them under running water. Let them dry completely in the shade before putting them back. Clean filters mean better airflow, cleaner air and less strain on the unit.
2. Keep the outdoor unit clear
The outdoor condenser needs space to release heat. Don't store boxes, laundry racks or plants right against it, and keep the area free of leaves and debris.
3. Choose a sensible temperature
Setting the aircon very low doesn't cool the room faster; it just makes the unit run longer. A setting around 24 to 25°C is comfortable for most people and easier on your electricity bill. Using a ceiling or standing fan together with the aircon helps spread the cool air.
4. Close doors and windows
Every gap lets in warm, humid air the aircon has to work against. Keep doors and windows closed while it's running, and draw the curtains in rooms that get strong afternoon sun.
5. Run Fan mode before switching off
Some people run the unit on Fan mode for a short while before turning it off, to help dry the inside of the unit. Moisture left inside is what mould loves, especially in our humid climate. Check your unit's manual: many newer models have a built-in self-clean or dry function that does this automatically.
6. Pay attention to early warning signs
Catching a problem early is almost always cheaper. Book a check if you notice:
- Weaker cooling than usual
- Water dripping from the indoor unit (see why aircon leaks)
- A musty smell when it starts
- New rattling, buzzing or clicking sounds
- A noticeable jump in your electricity bill
What to leave to the professionals
Cleaning inside the unit, the cooling coil, the blower, the drain pipe and anything electrical or involving refrigerant should be done by a trained technician. A general service every 3 to 4 months covers all of this.
